Abstract:
The National Research Council's Computer Science and Telecommunications
Board, in their recent report, Computing the Future (Hartmanis
& Lin, 1992) says "New computing technology will have
to be fitted to customer needs more precisely, thus placing
a premium on knowledge of the customer's application."
The saying, "we must adapt the computer to the user, not
the user to the computer" is as true now as ever.
The book embraces and emphasizes user-centred design. Designers
should give early and continual attention to the user throughout
the development process. Designers can begin to understand users
by interviewing them and observing them at work both before
and during interaction design. Such techniques as user user
analysis, task analysis, information flow analysis and several
studies can be used to obtain a better understanding of the
characteristics of users of an application. Getting users involved
in interaction development is now widely recognized as a key
to improved usability of the interface. Developing of good system
models and different techniques for user involvement are very
important during interaction design.
