Development of Assistive Technology for People with Disabilities,
Driving Forces and Results
Author:
Ulf Keijer
Abstract:
The Swedish Handicap Institute aims at improving the quality
of life for people with disabilities by ensuring access to high
quality and well-functioning technical aids.
This publication presents the work and the results of a selection
of development projects carried out in the beginning of the
1990s. They illustrate a number of important advances in the
field of assistive technology for people with disabilities.
The publication also describes prerequisites for successful
development work.
An important driving force in the development of technical aids
is the person with disabilities themselves. Here is the demand
and here are those who really know the needs. Also the organizations
of the disabled play several important roles in the development
of technical aids. A function of the organizations of the disabled
is to present comprehensive demands on development and products
to the government, the municipalities and other authorities,
to identify needs and push for further development. Another
function is to spread information about technical aids to their
members. Some examples and models of user involvement in the
development process and methods (i.e.target groups) are described
in the publication
