Screen Based Telephony for the Blind

Important Issues in Todays Telematic Research

Author: Marco Mercinelli
Abstract: Screen phones are a natural extension of the classic phone, maintaining its advantages, while providing some functions typical of a PC environment. The screen phones and the new web-phones can provide access to different types of services, such as supplementary telephone services (e.g. caller identification, call diversion), specialised telematic services (e.g. home banking, teleshopping, access to databases), and finally the Internet.
The Telematics VISTEL project has brought together major European industries, Telecom Operators and Users Organisations in order to provide technical solutions and guidelines that could allow opening the smart phone market to visually impaired potential users. The project involving mayor European players and user organisations has analysed the technical problems of current screen-phones terminals and services. Possible solutions have been presented to users and discussed with them in user fora that have been set up by the project in the different participating countries. The visual screen phone information has to be provided to visually impaired through different adaptations that can be adopted according to the residual capabilities and preferences of each user.
