MOBIC, Mobility of Blind and Elderly People Interacting with Computer

Important Issues in Todays Telematic Research

Author: H.J. Bornschein
Abstract: The primary objective of the MoBIC project is to increase the independent mobility of blind and elderly persons in unknown environments. Based on intensive user needs studies, an interactive system, the MoBIC Travel Aid (MoTA) is developed with two parts:
MoBIC Pre-Journey System (MoPS), which allows blind people to study maps and plan their journeys ;
MoBIC Outdoor System (MoODS) which assists blind people when they are out on their journeys using Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) technology.
The prototypes have undergone extensive testing by blind and partially sighted people. Project members from different parts of Europe have worked at the field trial sites to contribute to the evaluation of MoBIC prototypes. Further blind people were trained to use the prototypes in their own homes.
