Abstract:
This paper reports recent activities and experiences from actively
involving users in the development and application work of technology
in assistive devices and services for people with disabilities.
A major program with the aim of developing, adapting, and applying
modern computer technology to assist disabled people has been
carried out in Sweden. Within the framework a number of projects
have been run as collaborative efforts between the Swedish Handicap
Institute and user organisations as well as single users.
The goal of one project was to develop user knowledge of computer
technology by study circles. Each circle comprised 10 sessions
in which 23 disabled persons were trained to be circle leaders.
After completed education the leaders themselves trained 130
persons. Topics were i.e.: How can modern technology compensate
for disabilities?-What are the potential problems and barriers
as a result of the introduction of modern technology in society?
In another project, the Mentek Project, members of a reference
group have been trained to become "technology consultants"
within their organisation.
