User Involvement in Assistive Technology Activities

The European Context For Assistive Technology, Assistive Technology Research Series

Author: Thomas Lagerwall, Gunnar Fagerberg, Ulla Göranson
Abstract: In the HEART Study all six lines were encouraged to include user aspects and user involvement as one perspective in their work, throughout data collection, analysis, conclusions and proposals regarding the different topic areas. A special Consumer Board worked closely with the Management Committee of the study.
One of the five principles of the TIDE Programme of the European Commission is the User Focused Principle . Users or potential users of assistive technology should be involved in all projects. The direct influence of users on different levels and processes is important from a perspective of competence and democracy.
As part of the Heart work on standardization, a model for user influence in standardization work was developed and set up. A research method for investigating user requirements in standardization which includes a user panel test was carried out.
At the European level, CEN, CENELEC, ETSI are recommended to establish advisory bodies on user requirements and accessibility.
