Involving Users in the Evaluation of Assistive Equipment

The European Context For Assistive Technology, Assistive Technology Research Series

Author: J. Pascoe, H. Pain, S. Gore, D.L. McLellan, S. Jackson, C. Ballinger
Abstract: Users and carers have an increasingly important contribution to make to health care services. Effective consultation between the health care professional and the user occurs only when the user can express his/her needs and experiences, and this information is considered when services or equipment for people with disabilities is reviewed.
The objective of the Disability Equipment Assessment Centre is to evaluate commercially available daily living equipment for people with disabilities. All evaluations involve trials by users and carers in a range of living situations. The paper describes the approach to obtain evaluative information about assistive equipment for daily living activities, which combines user and carer evaluations, technical tests and therapists evaluation. Focus groups, questionnaires, structured interviews, therapist observation and technical tests are used to record information.
Training courses are set up in order to familiarise the user with the product so that more realistic responses to questions about the usefulness and specific features of the product may be elicted.
