Abstract:
Children with disabilities are prescribed supportive seating
to prevent or minimise deformity and provide a posture that
facilitates upper limb function, head control and social interaction.
Currently there is no objective evaluative information about
these special seating to inform users, carers or prescribers
when making decisions.
A study has been undertaken using 5 adjustable upholstered chairs.
User, carer and therapist evaluations concerning comfort, support
for adequate posture, appearance, chair function and the user's
functional abilities for all 5 chairs were obtained. 29 children
aged 4-17 had an assessment session prior to testing the chairs.
The therapists, child and/or carer filled in questionnaires
concerning satisfaction with the chair, comfort, appearance
etc. The data were analysed qualitatively or quantitatively
as appropriate using qualitative examination methods and SPSS.PC
respectively.
