Placing users at the centre of design for all
Important Issues in Todays Telematic Research

Abstract:
In the design of both adaptive and assistive technology, it
is extremly important to place users at the centre of the design
process. This paper will illustrate a number of techniques for
effectively been used to involve users in the design process
from the earliest stages of design. This paper will consider
two case studies of the development of adaptive and assistive
technology for disabled and elderly people to illustrate how
relevant users can be involved in the design of technology and
the particular problems of designing for disabled and elderly
users.
The first case study is an example of assistive technology,
the development of a innovative navigational aid for blind and
elderly people within the MoBIC Project (TP 1148).
The second case study describes the access to public terminals
for disabled and elderly customers. The SATURN Project (TP 1040)
investigated the adaptation of public terminals to make them
usable and acceptable to disabled and elderly people. A wide
range of user groups was involved in the project.
